Overgade and its prolongation, Vestergade, is the historical highway across Funen. And so the area is one of the oldest in Odense. Until the alterations in 1996 Overgade served as a traditional, major thoroughfare in the city centre. The alterations introduced one-way traffic in the street and improved conditions for soft road-users. The street is paved with granite in different shapes from the island of Bornholm. The sidewalks have sett paving with kerbstones to mark the walking lines. The bicycle track has granite tiling to ensure the best possible comfort for cyclists. The carriageway has sett paving laid in a curved bond pattern, and the small, open spaces by Nedergade and Claus Bergs Gade have had a special treatment.
