It is not immediately noticeable when arriving in the city, but over the past 20 years many new buildings have been raised in Odense's old city centre. Space has been found for dwellings as well as office blocks and cultural institu tions, and concurrently the local authorities have reshaped a great many urban spaces to make them meet the citizens' requirements to outdoor life in a modern city. The design and layout of the new buildings and the new urban spaces interplays well with the old surroundings around them. In several cases it is the same materials and building details that have been employed in a new and dynamic manner.
