For almost 300 years Holmen was a closed, military area in the city, which developed a building history of its own. Today large parts of the area have been turned over to civilian purposes, and the military's solid buildings have been taken over by artistic educations, converted to dwellings and business premises. Several new buildings have been erected and new squares constructed, but all alterations respect the original culture-historical values, and so new and old supplement each other well.
